Canada star Alphonso Davies has revealed the reasons behind Barcelona’s decision to not sign him before his move to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

In 2019, the little-known Canadian left-back sealed a move to Bayern Munich from MLS outfit Vancouver Whitecaps FC. And it did not take him long to take European football by storm. In the 2019-20 season, he helped Bayern Munich win the Bundesliga as well as the UEFA Champions League titles and played a key role in both the triumphs.

The assist he provided to teammate Joshua Kimmich for the goal against Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals is regarded as one of the best of all time. In the same season, he went on to become the first Canadian to win the Champions League after Bayern Munich’s win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Alphonso Davies reveals the reason behind Barcelona snub:

One of the game’s biggest stars now, Alphonso Davies has sensationally revealed that Barcelona decided against signing him because of his nationality. Barcelona were reportedly ahead in the race to sign him ahead of Bayern but eventually pulled out because of concerns over his nationality.

“Barcelona actually reached out but the president said they didn’t want me. They said they didn’t want me because I was Canadian. I’m not gonna lie that kind of crushed my feelings a little bit,” said the Ghana-born defender while speaking on Say Less podcast:

At the same time, he also admitted that he is only basing that assessment on media reports as he denied any formal contract from Barcelona. Davies has enjoyed a stunning career in Europe so far but has personally struggled with his life. Speaking further, he explained how tough things are for a professional footballer away from the hustle and bustle on the field.

“Life as a professional footballer is very cool, no doubt. You can chill and enjoy life, but, after training, there’s nothing to do.

“For me, because I don’t have a family and my girlfriend is not living with me, I’m by myself. It’s a little bit worrying not having something to do and especially when all your friends have work. I probably have like five friends. I’m a popular loser,” he said.
