With Team India and their skipper Rohit Sharma facing severe criticism after failing to win the recently-concluded ICC World Test Championship final against Australia, former captain Sourav Ganguly has made a huge comment about Virat Kohli.
Virat Kohli’s highly-successful reign as Test captain came to an end in an unceremonious fashion last year. After being sacked as the limited-overs skipper, the batting superstar sensationally stepped down as the Test captain following the series against South Africa in January 2022. He was replaced by Rohit as the Test captain.
Rohit did well to take India to their second consecutive WTC Final but just like his predecessor, he too failed to guide the team to a win. And as Rohit faces criticism for his failure, Sourav Ganguly has said that the BCCI was not ready for Kohli to step down as India Test captain, which was his personal decision.

Sourav Ganguly on India’s Test captaincy:
The comments from Sourav Ganguly have come in the wake of several fans’ demand of reinstating Kohli as the Test captain. Following the poor show against Australia, the fans quickly took to social media to recall just how aggressive the team was under Kohli and opined that he should take charge of the team again.
“BCCI were not prepared for Virat Kohli leaving the Test captaincy. It was unexpected for us also after the South Africa tour. Only Virat Kohli can reveal why he left the captaincy. There is no point talking about this now because Virat Kohli left the Test captaincy. Selectors had to appoint an India captain. And Rohit was the best option at that time,” Sourav Ganguly told Aaj Tak in an exclusive interview.
Kohli ended his reign as India’s Test captain as the fourth-most successful captain in Test history. Under him, India won 40 Tests and registered 11 draws in 68 matches.
