According to The Sun, Everton has reportedly launched a £9million bid for Southampton defender Jose Fonte as the new Toffees manager Ronaldo Koeman is preparing to get cover for the expected exit of highly-rated John Stones.
John Stones have been linked with a move to Manchester City and reports suggest that the player is in advanced talks with the Citizens over a potential transfer.
The Portuguese international who has played a major role in their maiden Euro triumph is one of the experienced defenders available in the market, as Everton look to make a defensive signing before the start of the season.
The Toffees have so far signed only one major signing with goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg joined from Fulham.
Koeman’s bid to Fonte meant a major blow to Jose Mourinho as the Portuguese manager is keen to add an experienced defender to his line-up as Manchester United have a very young defense.
The 32-year old has drawn interest from all across the Europe after his fine outings with the national team in Euros. He has been playing for Southampton for the last six and half years as the player has known for his power aerial defense which is a must for a central defender.
According to a source closer to the negotiations, Southampton are yet to formally communicate Everton’s offer to the 32-year-old. But a reunion with Ronald Koeman would be a huge loss for Manchester United as Jose Mourinho is very keen to add the player to his roster with Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo expected to leave Old Trafford this summer.
