During the Rio Olympics, renowned author and columnist Shobhaa De received a lot of flak for her humiliating post on Indian athletes participating in the Olympics. At that time India had not won a single medal at the games and De took to Twitter to express her frustration. According to her, all athletes were doing at the Olympics was clicking selfies, and wasting opportunity and money. “Goal of Team India at the Olympics: Rio jao. Selfies lo. Khaali haat wapas aao. What a waste of money and opportunity,” De tweeted.
The comment did not go down well with others and she was brutally trolled for her post. The stinging remark also attracted widespread criticism, including from 2008 gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra, badminton player Jwala Gutta and many.
And it seems Bollywood director Ram Gopal Varma, who is known for his bold comments, has not learnt anything from Shobhaa De’s incident and angered fans by posting humiliating tweets about the Indian athletes’ performance in the Olympics. He took to Twitter to criticise the Indian athletes in a series of tweets:
