Former Indian pacer Rudra Pratap Singh will be always remembered for his heroic bowling display in the inaugural World T20 in 2007 in South Africa.
India surprised the cricketing world by sending a young side to South Africa. With the likes of Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly missing, the selectors named a largely untested and raw bunch of youngsters – with MS Dhoni named as the captain. But to everyone’s surprise, the team defied all the odds to win the tournament after defeating arch rivals Pakistan in the final. And one man, who played a very important role in that tournament was left-arm pacer RP Singh. He had a great tournament as he took wickets at crucial times to help India. And India’s match against New Zealand in Group E witnessed another fine display from the pacer. The Kiwi batsmen were cruising and by the end of the 19th over, they were 185 for 6. Craig McMillan, who was batting on 43 off just 22 balls, was looking very dangerous and a score over 200 was looking like a reality. But Singh bowled a fine last over and conceded only five runs to restrict the Kiwis to 190. He dislodged Daniel Vettori’s bails on the very first ball ball. The next ball was hit for a four by Shane Bond. With McMillan on the non-striker end, the New Zealand tail-enders were desperate to give him the strike but their attempt backfired as Singh and MS Dhoni effected three run outs in that over.
