The leg-spinner took the world by storm when he took eight wickets against West Indies. On an underprepared Madras pitch, the Indian team managed to score 382 runs with the help of century from Kapil Dev. At 98 for 2, West Indies were looking in a comfortable position only to see Hirwani destroy them as they got dismissed for only 184. The spinner finished the innings with 8 for 61. This made him only the fourth bowler to take eight wickets in an innings on debut.

In the second innings, where the visitors were chasing an improbable total of 416, the spinner once again destroyed their batting lineup. Hirwani took 8 for 75, for match figures of 16 for 136.
