The Indian team achieved a big milestone when the first Test match against New Zealand started today. It was India’s 500th Test match and they have now become only the fourth team to play 500 or more Tests.
Virat Kohli won a good toss. The pitch was looking good for batting. KL Rahul and Murali Vijay opened the innings. Rahul was looking good but was dismissed for 32 when he failed to judge a quicker ball from Kiwi spinner, Mitchell Santner. Cheteshwar Pujara then joined Vijay in the centre. Fresh from a brilliant batting display in the recently concluded Duleep Trophy, Pujara came into the game in fine form and he continued to bat with is the same form. The Gujarat run-machine used his feet efficiently against the spinners and also played the pacers comfortably.
He added 112 runs for the second wicket with Murali Vijay. In the process, he also completed his 8 Test fifty. And just when he was looking set for another big score he offered a simple catch back to the bowler. Santner bowled a fuller delivery and Pujara tried to drive it forward but could not keep it on the ground. As expected he was very disappointed after the dismissal and was seen hitting his bat on the ground out of anger.
