Arsenal legend Robert Pires has expressed his interest in becoming the sporting director at the club in the future.
The 42-year old has been an integral part of Arsenal’s invincible squad as he made 284 appearances for the Gunners as he won three Premier League titles and two FA cups during his time with the club from 2000-2006.
Pires is currently pursuing coaching as he has commenced his career as a coach with Arsenal’s first team at the Emirates but has shown interest in becoming the sporting director of the club.
The Frenchman has recently retired after being an active footballer and is keen to take up an important role at Arsenal, a club where he has become a football great. He has played a great part in the invincible season as he along with Thierry Henry have scored 57 goals for the club across all competitions that season.
‘In 2011, when I came back to London after Aston Villa, I want to give back to Arsenal everything it gave me. I’m not rancorous!’ Pires said in an interview with French news outlet L’Equipe.
‘I become ambassador at the club. The next step would be to become a sporting director, that’s what I want and Arsene knows it.
‘But what he is doing today for me, letting me train with the first team every morning, it’s unique in Europe and I’m so thankful to him for that.’
Arsene Wenger was heavily criticized for not offering managerial roles to the former players like Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira in the past. However, the boss seems to have a great relationship with Pires as the latter could be offered more important roles at the club in the future which should be a great news for the fans.
