Manchester United star would be perfect for Arsenal or Chelsea, claims Harry Redknapp 1

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has said that underperforming Manchester United star Wayne Rooney can get back to his lethal best if he makes a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea or Arsenal.

The England international was severely criticised for his dismal performance in the Manchester derby and matters worsened for him after another disastrous display in United’s shocking 1-3 defeat to Watford. He was omitted from the starting eleven after that match and came  off the bench in last weekend’s win over Leicester City as well as the Europa League clash with Zorya Luhansk.

Recently, the England skipper admitted that midfield would be an ideal position for him since he has lost some pace.

Rooney said: “I feel I can control and dictate games from there. I’m not saying I’m better. I’m saying I can play there to a very high standard. Time will tell. It’s obvious I’m not as quick as I was. You can always have a football brain. I’ve got that.

Rooney could leave Man United and join Arsenal or Chelsea, claims Redknapp

However, Redknapp is confident that a new challenge can get revive Rooney’c career.

Talking to London Evening Standard, he said: “He’s suffered with his form and I hope he revives himself at Old Trafford but if not a change of scenery could do him good.”

Citing Paul Merson’s example, who was instrumental in Redknapp’s club’s promotion to the Premiership in 2002–03 during the twilight of his playing career, Redknapp said:“It was a different level to Wayne, of course, but Paul Merson transformed Portsmouth for me.”

“He arrived back in 2002, the lads loved him and he was a good player given a fresh test of his character.

“There are certain players who thrive off that and Wayne might just need a new challenge.”

Contrary to Rooney’s claims,Redknapp believes that he can make a big difference for a big club in the No.10 role and said that midfield is not for him.

“He would be a great signing for a couple of seasons and could have a major impact on a Premier League club,” he added.

“He could tip the balance for a top-four team if United were to let him go.

“I’d take Wayne at Arsenal or Chelsea and he has to play as a No.9 or 10 — midfield isn’t for him
