When the people from both sides of the border in playing the blame game, Pakistani batsman Mohammad Hafeez has shown the way forward. Leaving behind the recent tensions between the two countries, Hafeez has shown a beautiful gesture by congratulating Team India on securing the World number one rank in Tests. India replaced arch rivals Pakistan from the top after they whitewashed New Zealand 3-0 in the recently concluded Test series.

The last few months have seen India and Pakistan involved in the race to secure the Test supremacy. In August, Pakistan achieved the top ranking for the first time in their history. They had moved up to the second position after their 2-2 draw in the away series against England. At the same time, India reached the top after beating West Indies in St Lucia for a 2-0 lead in the four-match series but the failure to win the final Test saw them losing the top rank to their arch rivals. They again reclaimed the number one rank after defeating New Zealand in the second Test but the rankings were not updated as according to the rules they are updated only after the conclusion of the series. After the final Test at Indore, where India defeated New Zealand by 321 runs, they formally replaced Pakistan at the top of the table.

Tensions have escalated between the two countries after the Uri attacks in which 19 Indian soldiers were martyred. Former cricketers and officials from both the countries have hinted that that resuming the bilateral ties looks a distant dream now but Hafeez’s gesture is surely the way forward.
