The first One-Day International match between India and New Zealand had a fitting ending as Virat Kohli hit a huge six over long on to cap off a fine individual and team performance.
Earlier, New Zealand failed to put on a good batting display as they could score only 190 runs. Indian bowlers took full advantage of a lively pitch and reduced the visitors to 48 for 5. Matters deteriorated for the Kiwis when they lost their seventh wicket for only 65 runs. But opening batsman Tom Latham held firm from one end and shared two important partnership – 41 runs with Doug Bracewell and 73 with Tim Southee to take his team to a respectable total. The Kiwis were eventually dismissed for 190. Latham remained unbeaten on 79 and also became the first New Zealand batsman and ninth overall to carry his bat.
Chasing the small total, India made a fine start as Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane added 49 runs for the first wicket. New Zealand saw a slim hope of making a comeback when India lost their second wicket on 62 runs but Virat Kohli’s brilliant innings ended their hopes.
Continuing his red-hot form in limited-overs format this year, the Indian vice-captain scored his 37th fifty. He looked in total control throughout the innings and scored 85 off only 81 balls to take India home. The brilliant knock was studded with nine fours and a huge six that was the last shot of the match.
