New Zealand finally registered their first win on the tour after defeating India by 6 runs in the second ODI.
Earlier, Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bowl first. Umesh Yadav proved his decision right straight away when he dismissed Martin Guptill for a duck in the second ball of the match. But then a 120 run partnership between Kane Williamson and Tom Latham steadied the ship. Except for Williamson, other New Zealand batsmen failed to score big but Williamson’s eighth ODI century took New Zealand to a respectable total of 242 runs.
In reply, India made a poor start as they lost Rohit Sharma cheaply. Matters deteriorated for the hosts when they lost in-form Kohli with only 40 on the board. India were in deep trouble when they were four down for only 73 runs. But a 66 runs partnership between MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav gave the hosts some hope. Dhoni then added 33 runs with Axar Patel and just when it was looking like India would claw their way back into the match, three quick wickets inside 11 runs tilted the match in New Zealand’s favour.
But a 49 run partnership between Umesh Yadav and Hardik Pandya added another twist to the topsy-turvy match. Well, that was not the end to the twists as the visitors dismissed Pandya with India still needing 11 to win. With 11 needed from the final over, India fell short by 6 runs when Tim Southee clean bowled Jasprit Bumrah to help New Zealand level the five -match series 1-1.
