Patrice Evra's message to Luis Suarez after winning the Golden Shoe 1

It has been five years since a Liverpool vs Manchester United match at Anfield was overshadowed by a subsequent racism row involving Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra.

It turned out that Suarez’s eight-match ban and £40,000 fine after being found guilty of racially abusing Evra was the just start of a bitter rivalry that would ensue.

Handshakes were snubbed and humiliating celebrations were performed when the pair would face off again and their continued dispute often added an entirely different dimension to an already fiercely contested battle between their respective teams.

However, when the Uruguayan collected his Golden Shoe award on Thursday for being the top scorer in Europe, the last person he would have expected to congratulate him was Evra.

But that is exactly what happened via an Instagram post on the French defender’s official account.

s far as olive branches go, this is pretty admirable from Evra.

You can see the post below which was accompanied by a caption that read: “Only love and never hate!!! Luis, you’re a great player, the best number 9 Congratulations Luis @luissuarez9 I love this game !!!”

The message has been met with even more surprise from the general public, considering what Evra had posted just a few days previously.

Ahead of Man United’s very dull 0-0 draw with Liverpool on Monday night, Evra – who now turns out for Juventus – controversially posted a video of his rather over exuberant celebrations in front of Suarez after the Red Devils were victorious in 2012.

Of course, we do not expect any sort of response from the now Barcelona striker but it would be nice if they could both put the sour incident behind them – Evra is certainly willing to.
