Almost as soon as the draw for the fourth round of the EFL Cup was made, footballing authorities and the police would have felt uneasy after seeing Chelsea drawn to face West Ham on a Wednesday night.

The clubs’ rivalry spans off the pitch just as much as on it and it was always unlikely the game would pass by without incident given the hatred between the two sets of fans.

So although the Hammers were victorious – as goals from Cheikhou Kouyate and Edimilson Fernandes were enough to see off Chelsea, who had Gary Cahill score a late consolation in reply – it won’t be pictures of the players that dominate the headlines.

Unfortunately, crowd disturbances marred the on-pitch activity as plastic bottles, coins, and even chairs were thrown between both teams’ supporters.

Despite an alcohol ban and increased police presence before and during the game, trouble could not be prevented and various videos have emerged to show the scary events that took place.

With the match nearing its conclusion, the stewards and police struggled to keep each side separate at one end of the London Stadium – as you can see below.

One Chelsea supporter who was at the game felt it was like being back in the heydays of hooliganism from decades gone by.

“It was like being back in the 1970s. The amount of coins that were thrown, seats that were thrown, it was an absolute nightmare,” a fan called Ian told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I think there were people there who were on the lookout for trouble. If trouble was going to be there, they wanted to be at the front of it.”


It is not the first time West Ham have had crowd trouble since moving to what was formerly known as the Olympic Stadium and the Football Association will be keen to see those involved severely punished.
