The historic Test victory over the all-conquering Australian team at Eden Gardens in 2001 can be said as a stepping stone for the young Indian team led by a dynamic captain Sourav Ganguly, which went on to make India a force to reckon with in all conditions. And remembering that historic Test will be incomplete without mentioning VVS Laxman. After losing the first Test of the series in Mumbai, the hosts were looking down the barrel in Kolkata too after being asked to follow-on but Laxman then played a knock that will always be a part of the cricketing folklore.
The stylish batsman from Hyderabad played a monumental innings of 281 against a bowling line-up comprising of Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne and added 376-runs with Rahul Dravid to set the platform for one of India’s finest victories in the longest format of the game. The former batsman continued to churn out mesmerising performances throughout his career to save the team on numerous occasions. If Rahul Dravid is called ‘The Wall’ of Indian cricket, then without any hesitation, one can call Laxman ‘The Crisis Man of India.’ Batting at No.5 and No.6, he gave the millions of Indians hope. Over a career spanning 16 years, Laxman scored over eight thousand runs in Tests with an impressive average of over 45.
Well, the retired batsman is celebrating his 42nd birthday today and the cricket fraternity made sure to wish the elegant batsman.
