Cheteshwar Pujara has become just the third player in the history of Indian cricket to score a century in his first international Test at home. Playing at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot, local boy Pujara smashed a ton at a difficult situation to get his name added to that list. Rusi Modi, the former Indian batsman was the first one to achieve this record as he smashed 112 runs against touring West Indies in Mumbai at Brabourne Stadium in 1948. The second occasion came in the same state but at the different ground when the former Indian all-rounder, Eknath Solkar, smacked a ton at Wankhede stadium in 1975. After a wait of 41 years, finally, an Indian batsman has made it to this list.
Local fans were cheering for Pujara for each and every run he scored after entering nervous nineties. His innings came at a time when the Indian team needed someone to stay at the crease to recover from an early morning stutter. He along with Murali Vijay helped team India to gain momentum.
Pujara ended his innings with a score of 124 when he was caught by Alastair Cook at first slips off Ben Stokes but had already done the actual work by standing up for the team when they needed him the most. At the time of his dismissal, team India were 277/2 with 260 behind England’s total.
Rusi Modi (Mumbai, BS) and Eknath Solkar (Mumbai, WS) are the only Indians to have scored a 100 on their home venue’s Test debut. #INDvENG
