Alviro Petersen, former South Africa batsman, who was charged with breach of conduct by Cricket South Africa, has contradicted CSA’s statement and has turned down claims of agreeing to fix any match for money. Though, he has accepted the fact that he played along with those involved in this kind of act but was never involved in any kind of illegal act.

On behalf of Petersen, his lawyer issued a statement in which he mentioned Petersen’s views and said Petersen is surprised by his name coming up in this act.

“Alviro acknowledges and admits that he played along with other persons involved in the scandal so as not to alert them to the fact that an investigation was underway,” Petersen’s lawyer said.

“Alviro was in constant contact with the investigative team from the time he reported his knowledge of the scandal until Bodi was charged and he gave information that he had received of actual plans to influence matches to the investigative unit,” statement reads.

Petersen was set to play for  the Lions in the controversy-marred T20 league, that started on Saturday. He was suspended from taking part in the tournament the same day and was given 14 days to answer.

“Whilst Alviro is willing to take responsibility for his actions over this period, although they were taken in good faith under the circumstances at the time, he could not reach agreement with CSA because he believes that the sanctions which would have been imposed were disproportionate to Alviro’s actions and do not take sufficient cognisance of the defenses and mitigating circumstances put forward by Alviro,” Statement reads.

A veteran of 226 first-class games, Petersen played 36 Test matches for South Africa scoring 2093 runs at an average of 34.88.

Cricket South Africa will soon table a meeting with Petersen after his lawyer returns to the country on November 22.
