What can an entire stadium full of spectators want from the gladiators? Nothing, but victory. All that victory demands of is to emerge victorious and no due course in between. Today, something similar happened as the entire stadium of Barabati International Cricket Stadium of Cuttack, Orissa, saw the home side India playing with their mighty opponents in the game of Cricket, Sri Lanka. It was the first match of the India vs. Sri Lanka One Day International series and in spite of having the prices of the tickets raised to an extent higher, the enthusiasm of the crowd did not seem to get lower even a bit. The game served as a launching pad for the Lankan kid, P.M.S. Gamage. Umpires V.A. Kulkarni of India and B.N.J. Oxenford of Australia along with the TV umpire C. Shamshuddin of India, Match referee D.C. Boon of Australia and Reserve umpire P.G. Pathak of India were all of immense repute.
Sri Lanka won the toss at the start and chose to field. The decision on the other hand, catapulted India’s chances to win and made Sri Lanka’s chances of winning seemed to dip down. Indian openers Ajinkya M. Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan , both did manage to pull off a ton each. Rahane scored 111 runs from 170 balls, before being dismissed by Randiv (that one was a full toss. Rahane came down the track to loft the low full toss over mid-off but didn’t time it well and gave a simple catch to Jayawardene). Dhawan, on the other hand, scored 113 runs off 159 deliveries, before being dismissed by the Sri Lankan bowler Priyaranjan (Dhawan went down on a knee to sweep the flighted delivery on leg stump, pivoting on the back foot, got an inside edge onto his front leg and the ball rolled down to just clip leg stump and the leg bail falls softly). Suresh Raina scored 52 runs off 36 balls till he was didmissed (he went too far across for the sweep, the ball pitched on middle and leg and had a bit of angle, Raina missed and was struck in front of leg stump) and Virat Kohli scored 22 runs off 34 balls before being dismissed (Kohli holes out and gives Randiv his third wicket on the last ball of his spell! It was a poor delivery, very short and on the leg side, Kohli pulled and only found the fielder in the deep at backward square leg). Randiv took both the wickets of Raina and Kohli. Team India however, ended their show at 363 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Only Randiv took 3 wickets. The Sri Lankan batting, on the other hand, did falter to make any mark. They ended up at 194 runs for the loss of 10 wickets, even before the 50 over mark. Ishant Sharma had been the man for India today with the ball. Taking 4 crucial wickets and all at crucial junctures of time, he made India’s chances look stronger and bolder.
