Michael Hussey, former Australian great, is surprised by oodles of changes made by Australian selectors for the third Test against South Africa to be played at Adelaide from November 24. ‘
Selectors axed a total of five players and only six players viz David Warner, skipper Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Stac, Josh Hazelwood and Nathan Lyon survived.
Hussey was shocked with this and couldn’t believe this, “Wow! I’m in a bit of shock,” Hussey told the Unplayable Podcast.
“I can’t believe there’re been so many changes. The selectors have really wielded the axe. I’m not sure I would have gone for that many changes, personally, “I’m sure the selectors would have had a lot of discussion leading into these decisions and there’re some really tough calls been made there.
“It’s a very tough call on players like (Callum) Ferguson and Joe Mennie who were just given one opportunity. I thought Joe Mennie (1-85) bowled quite well in the Test match in Hobart. He’s well within his right to feel a little aggrieved. And Callum Ferguson, he’s pretty unlucky,” he added.
Australia have already lost the Test series but will be hope to turn the tables in the pink ball clash. However, another loss here can also result in Smith being shelved from captaincy as the new bunch of selectors do not look in the mood to tolerate any underperforming candidate in the squad.
