Australia batting great Allan Border has demanded some soul searching for all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who has been in news for all odd reasons recently.
Speaking for Inside Cricket on Fox Sports, the former skipper said the ‘Big Show’ needs to put a check on his behavior if he intends to make a return to the national squad and most importantly, gain trust of his peers.
Despite claiming he (Glenn) himself is the reason for ouster, Border admits he is a big fan of the hard-hitting Victorian.
During the first two ODIs against New Zealand in the Chappell-Hadlee series, Maxwell wasn’t picked and was forced to carry out drinks. However, captain Steven Smith and coach Darren Lehmann claimed to have moved on from Maxwell’s controversial comments against Matthew Wade, which has raised hopes of him wearing his playing boots in the third match at Melbourne on Friday.
“Obviously there’s some dramas happening in Victoria and with Glenn Maxwell himself. Maybe he’s got to sit down and reassess where he’s at: Is he the problem, or is he the one causing all the issues? And once he sorts all that, he’s too good a player to be sitting on the sidelines. We haven’t seen the best of him, particularly in red-ball cricket.”
“He’s got the potential to play Test cricket (again) down the line somewhere but he’s got to get himself sorted out. Now if that means a move, he should do it and just start afresh somewhere else.”
Not long ago, it was speculated Glenn Maxwell wants to leave Victoria Bushrangers and join New South Wales but the former Wales skipper Brad Haddin is not in favor of this idea.
“I think (the) Victorians might have lost a little bit of trust in him, to be perfectly honest. So I think he needs to sit down to see if they can work it out together. I don’t think NSW is the fit for him. He’ll be behind (Kurtis) Patterson, (Nic) Maddinson and even Peter Nevill (in the batting order). So I don’t think that’s going to solve his problem.”
