Surprise: Simon Mignolet’s Response To Loris Karius Being Dropped 1

It’s been an interesting season so far for Loris Karius.

The goalkeeper was thought to be one of Liverpool’s most crucial summer signings when he arrived from Mainz O5 in a £4.7million deal.

Needless to say, things haven’t quite worked out so far.

The 23-year-old had a nightmare in the 4-3 defeat to Bournemouth and was arguably at fault for Nathan Ake’s winner.

The 2-2 draw with West Ham didn’t go much better for him, and it seemed like only a matter of time before he was dropped.

Jurgen Klopp opted to take the stopper out of the spotlight for the trip to Middlesbrough. It won’t have helped his case that Simon Mignolet came into the side and put in a fine performance, keeping a clean sheet as the Reds won 3-0.

Given that Karius has managed that feat just three times in ten games, you couldn’t blame Mignolet if he was feeling a little smug about earning his place back from his supposed replacement.

Yet, the Belgian’s actually given his backing to his rival team-mate.

“We are team-mates, we all have to get through it and push each other,” he said, as per Goal.com.

“For Loris, it will not be nice. But he’s more than capable and professional enough to deal with it and learn from it.

“He will only get stronger from it.”

Very touching, but he’d probably still rather not be on the bench.

Karius might be in the midst of an off-field spat with Gary Neville, but at least he can count on his teammates for support.

Perhaps Mignolet is feeling sympathetic as he knows what it’s like to be under fire at Anfield.

The former Sunderland man has made his fair share of mistakes in his time at the club too, so he’d hardly be in a position to gloat.

“That’s part of the job (being dropped) and you have to be mentally strong to deal with that,” he added.

“I’m coming up to 29, and I’ve been through it as well. It’s not nice.

“You only get stronger from it, especially at a club like Liverpool Football Club. One thing gets really big out of nothing.”
