Shahid Afridi has expressed disappointment over the detention of his fan wearing a jersey of Pakistan with Afridi’s name written over it, “It is shameful that such an incident should take place. It is sad that politics is being played with cricket,” Afridi was quoted as saying by Jang newspaper.
As per the reports, a local person named Ripon Chowdhury was detained by police after a police complaint from President of the youth wing of Bhartiya Janta Party, the ruling state in state and the centre. Ripon Chowdhury has been booked under section 120(B), 294 of the Indian Penal code.
Meanwhile, Shahid Afridi has appealed to Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to look into the matter,
“Such incidents highlight intolerance and should be condemned. Because if there are fans of Pakistan cricket players in India the same is the case in Pakistan where there are fans of Indian players,” Afridi said.
“Cricket fans should only be seen as cricket lovers in both countries,” he added.
A same kind of case happened earlier this year in Pakistan when a fan of Virat Kohli was imprisoned after he waved Indian flag after Virat Kohli’s innings of 90 runs against Australia in Adelaide. He was jailed for 10 years before getting bail from the court.
