Following a slightly difficult start to the season, Thibaut Courtois has managed to take a swipe at his critics by rediscovering his best form.
The Belgian international has managed to keep 10 clean sheets so far this season, re-establishing himself as one of the finest shot-stoppers in the league.
And with that form has come some serious interest from elsewhere, and it would appear that the Blues are not willing to take any chances on losing him.
In recent weeks rumours linking the 24-year-old with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid have grown louder, and the player’s own admission that he would one day like to return to Spain has got the fans concerned.
However, the Chelsea hierarchy are well aware of this interest coming from La Liga and are apparently already formulating a solution to keeping their star goalkeeper happy.
According to a report in The Telegraph Chelsea are keen to offer him a new deal that would see his weekly wage packet increase significantly.
At the moment, Courtois earns a weekly salary of £100,000, but the new deal would see that boosted to an impressive £150,000, which is a big wedge of cash for a goalkeeper.
The Blues had already made moves to keep the custodian happy by replacing former goalkeeping coach Christophe Lollichon with Antonio Conte’s coach Gianluca Spinelli, who has been partially credited with the player’s return to form.
Chelsea are safe for the time being as Real are still under a transfer embargo for the January transfer window, but they will be able to sign players again over the summer.
The La Liga title contenders had been hoping to lure Manchester United’s David de Gea to the club last summer, only to see him pen a new deal to remain at Old Trafford.
And while they are still keen on the Spanish international, Courtois remains high on their wish list, though they may have to meet Chelsea’s £73 million valuation that they placed on his head the last time Real enquired about his services in 2015.
