Chelsea will not be signing defender Simon Kjaer in this window. That’s the word from Turkey, as reported by Goal this morning.
Rumours linking Chelsea to the Fenerbahce have led the Turkish club to deny the connection outright.
It seemed a far-fetched idea anyway, given Chelsea have just recalled loan star Nathan Ake to plug any gaps at the back, and the Blues also have Kurt Zouma fit again having completed 90 minutes against Peterborough.
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has hinted he is considering using Ake as a wing back his preferred 3-4-3 formation.
But the jury is still out in regards to Ake’s immediate future with some critics unsure whether the 21-year-old will be able to force his way into the Blues’ defence given that it is currently the second-best in England’s top tier.
Still, the transfer rumour mill never stops, and this week it was the turn of Danish international Kjaer to be linked with Stamford Bridge. The 27-year-old has starred in Turkey since a move from Lille two summers ago.
While a denial from a club never does much to ruin a good rumour, this one was pretty flimsy, to begin with, and it looks highly unlikely Kjaer will be the man for Chelsea even if they do bring in a new face at the back this January.
27 years old and in his prime, Kjaer has performed well wherever he goes. He’s a journeyman that has gone from Palermo to Wolfsburg to Roma, back to Wolfsburg, on to Lille and now to Fenerbahce as of 2015.
That is not an easy schedule to keep on top of, as the different styles can work like a culture shock. But Kjaer has adapted wherever he goes.
He is also a genuine tackler and interceptor and even scores the odd goal. Not only that, but he’s been capped over 50 times for Denmark and has used his leadership to captain the side as well.
