Melbourne Renegades kept their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals alive by registering a dramatic one-run win over table-toppers Brisbane Heat.
Chasing a mammoth 200, the Heat began disastrously as Jimmy Peirson returned to the hut after scoring just a run. However, their skipper Brendon McCullum (64 off 40) was looking in his elements and kept the chase on with an explosive fifty and was ably supported by Sam Heazlett, who scored a quickfire 28. McCullum and Alex Ross’ dismissal in quick succession threatened to derail the promising chase but Ben Cutting kept the hosts in the game by scoring 35 off only 18 balls. With 18 runs needed from the last over, Joe Burns hit the first two first balls for maximums. The two sixes were preceded by a wide which meant the Heat needed five off the last four balls. However, the match took another turn when Burns was dismissed on the third ball by Nathan Rimmington. A wicket on the fourth ball sandwiched between two wides left the hosts to score three from the final ball. The pacer bowled a wide delivery again but Mitchell Swepson was run-out while trying to steal a single and handed the visitors a precious one-run victory.
Earlier, the Renegades openers, Marcus Harris and Aaron Finch, laid the foundation for a big total by adding 106 runs off only 54 balls. The explosive partnership was ended when Harris was dismissed for 48 by Ben Cutting. Four overs later, the Renegades skipper was sent back by Mark Steketee after scoring 71 off only 35 balls but the middle-order batsmen ensured that the visitors do not squander the good start and scored quick runs to take the total to just one run short of 200.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the match.
That is unbelievable. Why run on the wide? Disappointing way for the best bet to go down. Gades still alive! @TheProfitsComAu #BBL06

May as well not have a square leg umpire! every run out goes up to the third umpire no matter how far the batsman is past the crease #BBL06
