Watch: MS Dhoni Instructing Virat Kohli To Change Field Placements 1

Speaking for the first time after stepping down from the limited-overs captaincy, Mahendra Singh Dhoni had hinted that he would not give up on the responsibility and would always be giving his valuable inputs from behind the wickets.

Interacting with the media prior to the ODI series, he had said: “My job will be to assist him wherever needed, giving him my thoughts from behind the stumps. That’s the real asset of the wicketkeeper.”

“From my side, it will be a flow of information. Information that doesn’t confuse and then he can pick and choose. The good thing is that if I go up with 100 ideas to him, he can say no to all of them. That is important because he has to take the responsibility. So the more I can serve to him, the more he can pick and choose, and the better it will be for Indian cricket,” he had added.

And true to his words, the former skipper has been ever-present whenever Kohli was looking to make a decision. Starting from field placements to taking a final call on whether to use the Decision Review System or not, the World Cup-winning skipper was in the thick of the action in the recently concluded series. Well, luckily for the Indian team and its newly-appointed skipper, India’s most successful skipper has continued giving his inputs in the T20 series too.

The Indian team was in a spot of bother in the first T20 against England, when the visitors, in pursuit of 148, made a blistering start. They had raced away to 32 for 0 in only 2.2 overs before Dhoni intervened. Dhoni had a brief chat Kohli and Nehra, who had already conceded 8 runs from the first two balls of that over, before asking Kohli to change the field placements. Consequently, the third man came in while the fine leg and square leg fielders went back. On the other hand, Nehra switched to round the wicket and the move immediately paid dividends. Although he could not provide a breakthrough but managed to put a brake on the scoring rate by conceding only 4 on his last 4 balls.
