Simon Mignolet saved a Diego Costa penalty late in the second half as Liverpool played out a hard earned 1-1 stalemate against Premier League leaders Chelsea to end their run of three consecutive home losses.
Jurgen Klopp’s men enjoyed the possession early on and Georginio Wijnaldum tested Thibaut Courtois in the 12th minute but apart from that the hosts failed to build any substantial attack. And they paid the price soon when David Luiz fired the leaders to the lead by converting a free-kick in the 24th minute when referee Mark Clattenburg awarded a debatable free kick for Adam Lallana’s challenge on Eden Hazard. Mignolet was at fault too for allowing Luiz’s shot getting inside the goal as the Belgian was still organising his defense when the Chelsea defender took his shot.
The home team started in an emphatic manner after the break as Roberto Firmino missed a great chance to equalise when the Brazilian scooped an easy chance over the goal only three minutes after the restart. A couple of minutes later, Victor Moses hit the post before Wijnaldum hit the equaliser five minutes later. The Reds had a mighty scare when Joel Matip brought down Costa inside the box but Mignolet made amends for his mistake earlier in the game by brilliantly saving Costa’s penalty. Roberto Firmino had the chance to win the game for his team but the Brazil international sent a header straight into Thibaut Courtois’ hands.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the match:
FT: #LFC 1 Chelsea 1: Mignolet's penalty save earns Reds a deserved point after Wijnaldum had cancelled out opener from Luiz. Rot stopped.

Yes, ref blew his whistle. Shocking concentration from Mignolet. Shouldn't have been a free kick, but no excuse for switching off

That goal was 100% down to Mignolet not paying attention & Sideshow Bob caught him with his pants down. Still time to turn it around #LFC

What was Mignolet looking at when Luiz hit it? Ref blew the whistle, wasn't even ready..0-1. Against run of play. Let's keep going boys

I asked Mignolet Why he wasn't looking at the ball for David Luiz's goal but he didn't reply. I said You need to explain yourself, Simon.

I'm Hazard's biggest fan, but I'm not an idiot. The man has fallen off since late December. You all need to get rid of this herd mentality.

Kante attempted more tackles against Liverpool than Lovren, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Luiz, Can, Moses & Matip – combined! He's incredible #CFC

You might think that was a good save from Mignolet, but he was actually only then diving to save the David Luiz free kick.

6 – Simon Mignolet has saved 6 of the 14 PL penalties he's faced at Liverpool, more than any keeper at the club. Stopper.

Good save by Mignolet who benefitted from looking at the shot as it was taken. That could catch on.

Chelsea only dropped 13 points this season. 5 of them to Liverpool.
