After the humiliating 4-0 loss in India, the writing was very much on the wall for Alastair Cook. Resigning from captaincy was just a matter of time for the under-fire England skipper and the the 32-year-old finally ended all speculations by stepping down on Monday (February 6) after leading the Three Lions for over four years.
The last one year or so has seen England performing really poor in the Test format. Cook’s men began 2016 in an emphatic manner by winning the Test series in South Africa. However, the team failed to replicate that form thereafter as they drew at home against Pakistan, followed by the 1-1 draw in Bangladesh before a humiliating 4-0 loss against the world number one side.
Now putting all the criticism aside, one cannot forget that the southpaw was one of the best captains to lead England. In his 59 Test matches as England captain, the most by an Englishman, he led the team to victories in India and South Africa, plus two Ashes series wins.
As expected, tributes were coming in from all corners for one of England’s most successful captains. Here are some of the best messages from Twitter for the outgoing skipper:
Timing in life is everything .. and once again Alastair Cook has got it spot on .. A Great man who I hope plays on for many more years #Cook

If Cook has stepped down because he felt he was no longer enjoying captaincy, he will score many more runs since he will be at peace (more)

If however Cook was pushed and he still wanted to be captain, I suspect we might have seen the best of a genuinely outstanding player.

Wouldn't be the best tactical skipper @englandcricket has had, but nor have some startling batting collapses been Alastair Cook's fault.
