Australia’s sensational win in Pune against India was always going to create a huge buzz. And why not? Nobody had given Steve Smith’s men even an outside chance of winning any match in India.
Almost all the odds were stacked against the visitors. The team from Down Under had endured a horrid time in the sub-continent in the last one decade or so. Since the Test against Bangladesh in 2006 when Jason Gillespie’s double century led them to a huge win, the Australia team has won just one Test. Since then, they had lost 13 of the 17 Tests they’ve played in Asia. Moreover, their last Test victory in India had come way back in 2004 and not surprisingly, they began the series as underdogs.
However, led by a sensational bowling display from Steve O’Keefe, the Kangaroos thrashed their much-fancied opponents by 333 runs to go one up in the series. The left-arm spinner, who was playing his first Test in India, took 12 for 70 in the match to help his team win a Test match in India after almost 13 years.
As expected, praises have been pouring in from all quarters for the spinners and former Australia pacer Mitchell Johnson too joined the bandwagon to congratulate the bowler. However, the former speedster have come up with an unusual way of wishing his former teammate.
The 35-year old took a dig at the India coach Anil Kumble who had said that O’Keefe’s bowling was steady on the second day of the Test when the spinner had taken 6 for 35.
Speaking at the post-day presser, Kumble had said:
“I think he (O’Keefe) bowled steady. He bowled consistently in good areas.”
Johnson tweeted:“And the coach of India says Steve O’Keefe is “Steady” Well done Steady O’Keefe keep it up”
