Martin Guptill Won't Be In Test Squad, Says Mike Hesson 1

Opener Martin Guptill’s heroics in the fourth ODI against South Africa has not impressed the Black Caps coach much. Mike Hesson has said Guptill’s innings against South Africa will not earn him his place back in the Test squad.

In his last eight ODIs, Guptill has scored two tons. In the last game against South Africa, he single-handedly demolished the visitors with his knock of 180 and became the first player to touch the 180-run mark three times in his ODI career.

Though, Hesson called his innings an exceptional one but he is not willing to give him another go in Test format.

“He’s not in the Test side, I think you’ve probably got to look at Martin’s record at the moment and make that decision,” Hesson told Radio New Zealand.

“There’s plenty of examples around the world of players who have been extremely good at one format and not the other, hence there’s three different formats.”

In 47 Tests, Guptill has averaged below 30, which is not good enough for any opening batsman. He is highly rated for his batting abilities but in Tests, he has failed to live up to his potential.
