Real Madrid had the opportunity to make more history in their La Liga encounter with Las Palmas at the Bernabeu on Wednesday evening. And Isco delivered after just eight minutes.
Zinedine Zidane’s men went into the clash with the Canary Islanders on a run of netting in 44 straight matches – a streak stretching back almost a year.
That brought them level with Barcelona’s long-standing Spanish record of scoring in consecutive games, set between 1942 and 1944.
And having equalled Barca’s 73-year-old feat at Villarreal on Sunday, Los Blancos moved ahead of their arch rivals early in the game against Las Palmas thanks to Isco.
The last time Madrid fired a blank was back in April 2016, in a goalless draw with Manchester City in the sides’ Champions League semi-final first leg.
Before the match with Las Palmas, Real’s 11-month-long scoring sequence had brought 31 wins, 10 draws and just three defeats, with 118 goals for and 50 against.
But even this extraordinary feat can’t hide Real’s gloomy luck as they lost the top spot following yesterday night’s draw.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored two late goals as Real Madrid – who had Gareth Bale sent off – came from 3-1 down to draw with Las Palmas at the Bernabeu.
Isco gave Real an eighth-minute lead before Tana levelled with a firm shot.
Wales forward Bale was shown red early in the second half for shoving Jonathan Viera, who scored a penalty after a Sergio Ramos handball.
Kevin-Prince Boateng fired in moments later before Ronaldo’s penalty and header earned Real a point.
Real Madrid’s comeback was not enough to send them back to the top of La Liga. They now trail Barcelona by one point, although they have a game in hand on the champions.
