Having to sit outside the game for nearly four months is cheerless, that’s what the words of Rohit Sharma suggests. The opening batsman recently undergo the hamstring surgery, which he suffered during the last ODI against New Zealand in October and which kept him off the track for a long time now.

Speaking to PTI exclusively, Rohit said he won’t improve if he will stick to compare himself with others, as he feels, the competition is well within him and not with the outside world.

Rohit said he doesn’t concentrate on anything which in not in his control and rather looks to back himself in the games he gets a chance to play in.

“In my career so far, I have never thought about who is my competition. You can’t improve as a player if your thought process is channelized in those lines. My competition is with myself. I don’t waste my time concentrating on things which aren’t in my control. But I don’t want to miss a single match that India plays.”

The devastating opener has had gone through some tough phases in his career and that it has made him more tougher, mentally. Admiring his trait, he said, ‘I have that mental toughness to deal with situations but whenever there is a surgery, there are some initial fears. But once I was done with it, my doctors in UK told me that with a proper rehabilitation program, I would be fit to play within three and a half to four months. But it is tough when you can’t do what you love the most.’

Mumbai born Rohit is set to play for his state side against Andhra and Goa on March 4 and 6 respectively of Vijay Hazare Trophy with a mission to find his fitness and especially his mojo back. Observing his presence in the squad for domestic ties, Rohit said he is getting itchy to step on the ground and get things going.

Currently, he has been training in NCA Bengaluru, where he also joined the Indian team practicing in the ground ahead of the second Test match against Australia, which begins on March 4.

“I would love to be a part of current Test series. But then I will also have to take a step at a time. These two games will test my real time match fitness. Accordingly, I will have to inform the trainer and physio at the NCA as to how I have felt. I am feeling 100 percent fit but you would always like to hit a few deliveries and take it from there on.”
