The upcoming Asia Cup 2022 will be a huge tournament for Virat Kohli. The former India skipper has been struggling to score runs for quite some time now and the forthcoming tournament could very decide his chances of playing in this year’s T20 World Cup.
The right-handed batsman has not scored a century in international cricket since 2019. In recent months, he has looked like a pale shadow of his usual self. Virat Kohli had endured a tough outing in this year’s Indian Premier League where he struggled throughout the tournament.
In 16 games, he managed to score only 341 runs at an average of 22.73 and a strike rate of 115.99. His form did not change in international cricket too. Last month, he had a poor outing across formats in England. In the rescheduled Test, he managed to score only 11 and 20 as India lost the game. In the T20Is, he scored 1 and 11 before managing to score only 16 and 17.
Virat Kohli to retire?
Several recent reports have suggested that the selectors won’t be hesitating in dropping Virat Kohli from the T20 team ahead of the T20 World Cup if he fails to do well in the Asia Cup. And amidst all these, Virat Kohli’s recent tweet has left several fans baffled. The India batting superstar posted an emotional tweet for his former teammate and captain MS Dhoni out of the blue.
“Being this man’s trusted deputy was the most enjoyable and exciting period in my career. Our partnerships would always be special to me forever. 7+18,” tweeted Virat Kohli.
Kohli made his debut under Dhoni’s captaincy way back in 2008 and soon became a key member of the team thanks to the former captain’s support. Kohli was a part of the Dhoni-led Indian team that won the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. He soon became the vice-captain of the team across formats and eventually replaced Dhoni as the captain in all the three formats.
And as Kohli posted the tweet for Dhoni, many fans feared that Kohli’s days in T20Is are numbered. Here are some of the reactions to his tweets:
