On 2nd April i.e, today, in 2011 exactly nine years before, Team India lifted the coveted ICC World Cup trophy for the first time since their last win came in 1983 under the tutelage of Kapil Dev. Indian fans, on its anniversary, celebrate the 2011 World Cup victory and remember the journey of the tournament.

India had performed decently in group stage matches in the tournament. They entered the grand finale after thumping the arch-rivals Pakistan in the semi-final by 29 runs. In finals, India faced Sri Lanka which had the likes of Lasith Malinga, Lasith Malinga, Kumar Sangakkara, and Mahela Jayawardena.

Back then, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat. Mahela Jayawardena’s unbeaten 103-run knock led the Islanders to set the target of 275 runs at the loss of six wickets. In reply, India chased down the target with Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni’s prolific batting and won the match by six wickets.

Now, it has been nine years to that victory and the World Cup-winning heroes have also moved forward in their lives. So, here we have discussed the Indian players (playing XI) who played the finale and where are they now:

The aggressive opener Virender Sehwag could not show his power in the finals against Sri Lanka. The lethal bowler Lasith Malinga picked up his wicket at a duck. Sehwag’s wicket loss had silenced the crowd of Wankhede Stadium as the pressure was on India.

It might be the worse memory for Sehwag as he got out on the very second ball he faced. However, he had contributed decently in the league stage matches. He scored 380 runs in 8 matches.

After the world cup, he had a dip in his form and with the emerging young cricketers, he lost the place in the Indian team. Sehwag last played with the team in 2013 against Pakistan and retired from all forms of international cricket on 20 October 2015.

Currently, the player host TV shows and does commentary. He also has opened some charitable schools to help the upcoming young cricketers to get the proper guidance.
