2017 ICC Champions Trophy – England Vs Bangladesh – England’s Player Ratings

The hosts England have kicked off their ICC Champions Trophy 2017 campaign with an emphatic eight-wicket victory against Bangladesh, thus sending a strong message for other top teams, that they here to win.

Chasing 306, never did they look in a state of bother except for losing the wicket of Jason Roy early. Joe Root with an unbeaten 133 off 129 balls led the run chase with Alex Hales and Eoin Morgan scoring 95 off 86 and 75 off 61, respectively, as England chased down the target of 306 in just 47.2 overs. This is the first successful chase of 300 plus in the history of the tournament. We might see quite a few of them in during the course of the tournament because of the change in dynamics of ODI cricket.

Earlier in the first innings, Tamim Iqbal with a brilliant 128 off 142, anchored the Bangladesh innings and put them in a very good position of 259/2 at the end of 44th over,  with the help of Mushfiqur Rahim who scored 79 off just 72 deliveries. But Plunkett pulled things back for England by picking up both the set batsmen in consecutive deliveries. Bangladesh only managed 46 off the last six overs though they had eight wickets in hand. Liam Plunkett finished with excellent figures of 10-0-59-4 to help England restrict the visitors.

Below, we have a look at the player ratings for England.

  1. Jason Roy- 0.5/5

Looks like the clock is ticking for Jason Roy. The English opener had yet another poor outing. He was dismissed only in the 3rd over of the innings by Mashrafe Mortaza for one. In the last eight innings, he averages less than 10. The English management will be really concerned with his form and might even drop him for the next match for Johnny Bairstow, who has done nothing wrong to be kept away from playing XI.

  1. Alex Hales – 4/5

While Jason Roy is struggling with his form, the other English opener, Alex Hales is looking in a good touch. The opener had played a brilliant knock after the early loss of Roy, stitching together a match-winning 159-run partnership with Joe Root. He gave enough space for Root to take some time early on in the innings. After scoring a match-defining 95 off 86 balls, Hales got out to part-timer Sabbir Rahman in an attempt to slog sweep him into the crowd. But he did enough damage before getting out and put England in a very strong position, from where Eoin Morgan and Joe Root took care of the things.

  1. Joe Root – 4.5/5:

Joe Root has once again proved why he is one of the best batsmen in the world. He played a near perfect inning in a steep run chase. Stealing singles with ease and also not missing out on bad balls was the feature of his innings.

In his knock of 133*, his first 100 runs came off 116 deliveries. But still, he hit only six boundaries. Staying there until the end and finishing it off, Root will surely be pleased with his efforts.

  1. Eoin Morgan – 3.5/5:

Eoin Morgan has yet another good knock under his belt. Coming in with a good platform set by Root and Hales, the English skipper didn’t give any chance for Bangladeshis to come back into the game after getting Hales.

He stayed till the end with Joe Root and finished off with 75* off 61 balls.

Ben Stokes.
  1. Ben Stokes – 3/5:

England went into the match with its pace quartet with the sense of some fitness issues with a couple of their bowlers. Their fears came true with Chris Woakes walking off the field after bowling just two overs.

Ben Stokes took the responsibility to complete the quota of overs and did reasonably well. He even got his side its first breakthrough in the form of Soumya Sarkar. Unfortunately, he didn’t get an opportunity to bat. He finished with figures of 7-0-42-1.

  1. Moeen Ali – 3/5:

To accompany the pace quartet, England had to drop wrist-spinner Adil Rashid. So they went with only one spinner in their XI in the form of Moeen Ali.

On a dead track with not so much for the spinners, he kept things tight. Moeen Ali finished with decent figures of 8-1-40-0

Jos Buttler

Buttler has had a fairly good day with the gloves behind the stumps. However, he didn’t get the opportunity to bat.

  1. Chris Woakes – 1/5:

Chris Woakes’ injury is definitely not a good news for the hosts. The form is he has been in, the hosts must have expected him to be the leader of their attack. We will have to wait & see if we can see more of him in the tournament or not.

He walked off the field after bowling only two overs, which included a maiden. His figures read 2-1-4-0.

Liam Plunkett – 4/5:

Plunkett has been the pick of the English bowlers. When Bangladesh was cruising towards something around 330, he pulled things back by dismissing both the set batsman out in consecutive deliveries which resulted in Bangladesh being able to post only 305 on the board.

He ended with excellent figures of 10-0-59-4.

  1. Jake Ball – 2/5:

Jake Ball started very well with the new ball. He even bowled a maiden in the power play. But he was poor as the day went by. He leaked too many runs. He ended with poultry figures of 10-1-82-1

  1. Mark Wood – 2.5/5:

Like Jake Ball & Chris Woakes, Mark Wood too started the things off very well against the tentative Bangladesh openers who looked more in survival mode.

He sneaked in with a maiden as well. He couldn’t make much impact in the match but yet kept things quiet. He ended up with figures of 10-1-58-0.
