2017 ICC Champions Trophy – Five Teams With Lowest Totals

In a large multilateral tournament like the ICC Champions Trophy, there isn’t any better opportunity for any team to showcase its sheer dominance and strength.

Over the years went by, we have witnessed numerous such matches, where one team has left the other team into complete misery on the back of a dominating performance.

Several of these encounters have often led to the game being termed as one-sided, but nevertheless, it has allowed units to showcase their ruthlessness at the highest stage.

While talking about being ruthless, how can one discount the efforts of the Indian bowlers in their previous Champions Trophy campaign of 2013, when they decimated the batting lineups of West Indies, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Thereby, below we have a look at the lowest five team totals and see which team had the misfortune of facing the brunt of a dominant opposition.

  1. Netherlands – 86 all out:

Making an entry into the ICC Champions Trophy, Netherlands had an edition to forget in 2002, as they were decimated by hosts Sri Lanka in Colombo.

The hosts batted first and piled up an impressive 292 on board, thanks to a century from the ever elegant Marvan Atapattu. In response, the Dutch were bundled out for a paltry total of 86, as there seemed to be no hint of any heart from the latest Champions Trophy entrants.

All the Sri Lankan bowlers ran a rout, as the team in orange was crushed in Colombo. The legendary Muttiah Muralitharan cleaned up the lower order, as he ended up with figures of 4-15.

  1. Zimbabwe – 85 all out:

The 2006 edition of the tournament in India witnessed several one-sided clashes, and one of them was played in Ahmedabad between Zimbabwe and tournament runners up West Indies.

It was the second qualifying match of the tournament and on bowling first, the Calypso Kings were all over the poor Zimbabweans. With an array of single digits scores in the bank for Zimbabwe, the team was bundled out for a sorry looking 85 within just the 31st over, as West Indies asserted their dominance.

Part-timer Chris Gayle chipped in with three wickets while conceding just three runs. In response, West Indies chased down the total in the 15th over to wrap up a one-sided clash.

  1. West Indies – 80 all out:

Life came a full circle for the men from the Caribbean, as barely six days after they humiliated Zimbabwe, it was their turn to face the music, as Sri Lanka welcomed them with similar scars at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium.

On the back of an extraordinary bowling performance from pacer Farveez Maharoof, West Indies, while batting first, were dismissed for 80, as the lanky pacer registered the best ever bowling figures in the history of the ICC Champions Trophy.

Barring the 28 from Wavell Hinds, none of the West Indian batsmen contributed in the innings. The target was chased down with exactly 220 balls to spare, as the West Indians endured some serious embarrassment.

  1. Bangladesh – 77 all out:

There was a precise reason why Bangladesh was often termed as a cricketing side which took a long time to improve. Some of their ultimate lows included humiliations in ICC event, and the one against New Zealand, in the 2002 edition in Colombo was one such instance.

In the 12th match of the tournament, the Bangladeshis would have well fancied their chances after restricting the men in black to just 244 in their first innings.

Rather than approaching the target with optimism, all attempts of a miracle vanished into thin air, as the Kiwis reduced Bangladesh into a laughing stock. After being 5-19, it was just a matter of time before the formalities were done and it didn’t take long for the side to be bowled out for 77 in just the 20th over.

Ace pacer Shane Bond ended with four wickets, as the Kiwis enjoyed their clash completely.

  1. USA – 65 all out:

The 2004 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy in England till date remains the only ICC event featuring the United States of America.

Pretty fair to assert, that was a forgettable affair, as the side was crushed in both its games by Trans-Tasman neighbours New Zealand and Australia.

In their second encounter against world champions Australia, the first timers were merely humbled, as the heavyweight Kangaroos decimated the USA batting lineup and wrapped up the formalities within 24 overs to ensure that the team was bowled out for a sorry 65.

Ironically, that remains USA’s final game in any ICC event and the wait to see the side in a competition remains long awaited.
