2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Indian Bowlers’ Brilliance, Comedy Of Errors Put South Africa To The Sword

South Africa falters in the make-or-break clash after riding on a solid opening stand as two crucial run-outs jolts the top-quality side which further put India right back into the game — to skittle out the struggling Proteas for 191 in 44.3 overs.

For India, it was a combination of brilliance in the field and good bowling as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah claimed two wickets each that came to the rescue after a good start from Protea openers. Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja bagged wicket apiece.

The highlight of the innings was three run-outs which summarise the story of the Proteas batting as they again struggled against the slow bowling after facing Pakistan.

Jean-Paul Duminy remained unbeaten on 20 off 41 balls as South Africa lost eight wickets on 51 runs after 140 for two.

Imran Tahir (1 off 7) was the last man to go after JP Duminy sent him back while scampering for a single. It was skipper Kohli himself, who produced a run-out while throwing the ball toward gloveman MS Dhoni, who found Tahir well short of his crease.

Kagiso Rabada (5 off 9), Morne Morkel (0 off 1) were removed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar on successive deliveries after Andile Phehlukwayo (4 off 11) was trapped in front of the stumps by Jasprit Bumrah following Chris Morris was caught by Kumar at the square leg to see South Africa 167 for six in 36.4 overs.

When things looked under control for South Africa at the score of 140, it was skipper AB de Villiers (16 off 12), who was sent back to the pavilion after Hardik Pandya produced a brilliant run-out which further saw Mahendra Singh Dhoni dislodging the zing bails in his own way.

In the do-or-die game, South African openers Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock gave a slow, but a decent start to the side which them posting 76 on board in 17.3 overs.

After the error of judgment between Faf du Plessis and AB de Villiers which saw the skipper lose his wicket, floodgates opened; the comedy of errors saw David Miller and du Plessis scampering to make their crease at the same end which saw Jasprit Bumrah throwing the ball on time towards non-striker’s end where Virat Kohli whipped off the bails to find Miller (1 off 3 balls) well short of his crease.

In the over number 34, it was Hardik Pandya, who dismissed du Plessis (36 off 50) as the more offcut saw the inside edge crashing into the stumps.

Interestingly, du Plessis was removed in the same fashion when he faced Hasan Ali.

It was an ace off-spinner spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who’s playing his first game of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy edition, claimed Amla, when he attempted a cut short only to see ball taking the thick edge and wicket-keeper Dhoni claiming a simple catch.

The right-handed batsman Amla scored 54-ball 35 which was comprised of four boundaries.

In 25th over, it was Quinton de Kock, who smashed his fifty was bowled by left-arm orthodox spinner Ravindra Jadeja when the latter went for a full-bloodied slog and the ball struck the off stump to read South Africa 116 for 2.

Earlier, Virat Kohli won the crucial toss and opted to field first, in the virtual quarter-final at The Oval on Sunday against South Africa.

Both the teams came from respective losses which further saw India making one change to see Ravichandran Ashwin coming at the expense of fast bowler Umesh Yadav.

On the other side, the Proteas announced all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo in place of pacer Wayne Parnell as AB de Villiers was already declared fit to take the field.
