2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Inzamam Feels India Could Lose Against Pakistan; Junaid Khan, Umar Khan Found Guilty

Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Chief Selector and former national team skipper Inzamam-Ul-Haq on Thursday has revealed the plan of Men in Green by saying their aim is to start off with a win against India before eyeing to win the coveted 2017 ICC Champions Trophy title in England and Wales.

“We are not going to England just to beat India but our prime target is to win the championship,” Inzamam was quoted as saying by Dawn.

In 2004, under the leadership of Inzamam-Ul-Haq, Pakistan beat Men in Blue by three wickets and four balls to spare at Edgbaston after chasing down the target of 211 in 49.2 overs in which Inzamam scored 41 off 79 when Mohammad Yousuf registered 81 off 114 balls to be named as Man of the Match.

“We can win again,” Inzamam said after recollecting the Group C match in Birmingham which was played on September 19 in 2004.

The 18-day competition will be beginning from June 1 when hosts England will take on Bangladesh, who looked to improve in the shorter format of the cricket.

The Multan-born veteran batsman was speaking as a chief guest when he witnessed an annual cricket match at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground of Muslim Gymkhana Cricket Club.

Inzamam has also been the part of Muslim Gymkhana Club when he was studying at Lahore’s Government College under the aegis of Lahore University.

On May 16, Pakistan 15-member squad arrived in London ahead of the much-awaited tournament which further seven players joined from Pakistan as Shoaib Malik, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Hafiz, Junaid Khan, Faheem Ashraf and Fakhar Zaman, who departed from Lahore.

However, other eight players had reached the United Kingdom after clinching the three-match Test series 2-1 at Windsor Park in Dominica.

In the Group B match, Pakistan will start their campaign on June 4 in Birmingham against India before facing South Africa on June 7 followed by Sri Lanka on June 12.

Inzamam stated he is confident of his team while expecting Sarfraz Ahmed-led unit has the ability to do well by giving their best in England conditions – to win their all matches.

The players will be part of a training camp after boosting their morale with a historic long format win which according to Inzamam will further push players to perform well in the upcoming event.

Moreover, PCB has also given a strict warning against middle-order batsman Umar Akmal and fast bowler Junaid Khan for their misbehaviour in the recently concluded Pakistan Cup as both were asked to pay the fine.

“I am just told that Junaid is absent. I am surprised. The manager and the coach have informed me that he is not going to play today. This is shocking information for me as a captain,” Umar stated at the toss time of Pakistan Cup 2017 while speaking to the PTV sports host.

Last month, Umar was leading Punjab side when the controversy took place which further witnessed Junaid giving it back to the skipper through a video statement from a hotel room while stating he was ‘ill’ and also informed the team doctor and management for his unavailability.

“The team doctor has advised me to take rest. I am disappointed to hear what Akmal has said about me. He tried to give the impression that I ran away from the match. In fact, I am dealing with food poisoning,” Junaid responded in his video message through Twitter.

Interestingly, both cricketers are the part of the 15-member squad for ICC Champions Trophy and 50 percent of the match fee was imposed on them and they will be under observation for at least a month after PCB found them violation its rules and regulations.

However, if players found guilty breached the Code of Conduct again as they’re under observation with their period starting from May 18 (Thursday), would further face one-month ban.
