2017 ICC Champions Trophy: South African Coach Russell Domingo Believes Quinton De Kock Has A Point To Prove

The South African Head Coach Quinton de Kock is not aware of his coaching stint with the Proteas national team, in the foreseeable future, but he feels batting prodigy Quinton de Kock has something to prove while adding the southpaw should be given quality time to rely on as he has definitely a point to present in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy which will kick off from the match of hosts England and visitors Bangladesh on June 1.

“He’s had a fantastic year and he has something like 12 hundreds in 79 matches and that’s a fantastic return‚” Domingo was quoted as saying by Business Live.

The 25-year-old de Kock didn’t have a success in 2015 World Cup when he was inducted into Proteas squad after recovering from an ankle injury.

“He’ll [de Kock] be the first to admit that he didn’t do well in the previous 50-over World Cup and didn’t meet the expectations placed on him. He’s got a point to prove in these types of events.

Domingo is hopeful of his ward for giving his best in the ICC’s mega event in which eight teams will participate including Bangladesh.

“But I know Quinton is desperate to do well in one of these ICC [International Cricket Council] events,” Domingo asserted.

On May 13 (Saturday), the 25-year-old left-handed batsman de Kock claimed five awards out-of-six at the Cricket South Africa Awards (CSA).

However, de Kock missed the one award as Twenty Cricketer of the Year which was swept by leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who recently claimed 18 wickets in the tenth edition of IPL for Rising Pune Supergiant before leaving for home owing to the national duty.

The star performer from South Africa has been sensational with the bat for the national side across all three formats, although he had a little success in Twenty20 International format.

“I really don’t want to say too much about the Champions Trophy,” de Kock was quoted as saying by The Citizen.

The Johannesburg-born de Kock revealed the Proteas side would be aiming to give their best in the knockout event.

“I don’t want to jinx myself or jinx the team. We just want to be that team who go there and do our best,” de Kock said.

The South African side hasn’t too much of the success in the ICC events and Domingo wants his team to excel this team.

“We can take a lot of comfort from the fact that in a lot of our bilateral series we’ve delivered in different conditions in different situations, Domingo added.

Moreover, Domingo wasn’t worried about the players form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). However, Hashim Amla and leg-spinner had a good outing whereas; AB de Villiers was dismal with the bat for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

However, Fad du Plessis missed out most of the games for IPL franchise Rising Pune Supergiant. The team doctor Mohammed Moosajee revealed Du Plessis is nursing shoulder niggle and is expected to be able for the three-match ODI series against England beginning from May 24 (Wednesday) at Headingley.

De Cock has featured in 79 ODIs while scoring at an average of 43.46 in which he scored 12 hundreds and 12 fifties respectively.
