2017 ICC Champions Trophy: Virat Kohli-Anil Kumble Rift Takes Another Ugly Turn

With just a handful of days remaining before Team India begins its ICC Champions Trophy campaign, the sole focus of the team should have been on how to defend the title. But instead of preparing earnestly for the tournament, the Indian camp is distracted by an alleged rift between skipper Virat Kohli and head coach Anil Kumble. And as if all these reports were not enough, another rumour has come up that shows the relationship between the captain-coach duo has hit an all time low.

According to a report in Ahmedabad Mirror, after the second warm-up game against Bangladesh at the Oval on Tuesday evening (May 30) , there were scenes of cold vibes between Kohli and Kumble during the net session. The report claimed that as soon as Kumble the nets with the side-arm, Kohli walked away. As of now nothing has been heart from any party including the BCCI but the latest report is a big indication that all is not well between the duo. For the time being, everyone is just speculating the cause of the alleged rift. Sources have revealed that it began right from Test series against England last year and escalated during the series against Australia. Moreover, the fact that not a single party has denied these developments is a clear indication that something bad is really cooking up.

Meanwhile, the deadline for applying for the head coach position ended on Wednesday (May 31). The BCCI had advertised for the post on last Thursday (May 25). Kumble, who has had a very successful stint so far, is also eligible to apply but it will be interesting to see whether the Indian cricket legend would want another term after the rift with the skipper.

And amid of all the speculations of the rift, former and current players have weighed in with their views

Batting Sunil Gavaskar has not paid too much heed to the rumours and said that since no captain and coach can always have the same thoughts in decision making, a situation like this can arise.

“I don’t think this should be taken seriously, this kind of discussion is in fact healthy. Coach should be somebody who is good for Indian cricket. He should have a vision for Indian cricket which would carry Indian cricket forward for the next 8 to 10 years,” Gavaskar said.

On the other hand, Kumble’s former India teammate Harbhajan Singh defended the former and advised the players to sort out the issue by talking to the coach.

“If someone has issues with Kumble, he should go and talk to him because he’s a person of respect and as per my experience, he can’t have issues with anyone,” the off-spinner said.
