2017 ICC Champions Trophy Warm Ups: India Vs Bangladesh – Preview

India got an ideal dose of the English conditions here at the Oval in London, as a decent warm-up fixture against New Zealand was witnessed in front of 12,000 excited fans. The atmosphere emerging out of the arena resembled any competitive match and for a warm up game, the level of support displayed by the fans was simply overwhelming. The men in blue, playing for the first time together as a team since January in ODIs impressed everyone with an extremely productive outing.

A big positive to emerge for India was the form shown by their bowlers – especially comeback man Mohammad Shami. Shami, who last featured in an ODI over 2 years ago, during India’s loss to Australia in the ICC World Cup 2015 semi-final at Sydney, showed no signs of rust. He was up and running straight away and with his three wickets decimating the Kiwi top order, Shami has all but booked his place in the playing XI.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah too lived up to their excellent form in the IPL and got a proper dose of the surroundings. Hardik Pandya was a bit expensive with the ball and this performance from him has given enough evidence that India must take the aggressive route of playing 3 genuine pacers and relying on Pandya for 10 overs on the flat decks on England could prove to be a fatal mistake later on.

With the batting too more or less ticking all boxes, India will now take on Bangladesh for the second warm-up game at the same venue. Bangladesh comes on the back of a shocking loss to Pakistan which could possibly deteriorate their confidence. Watching the two Asian sides fight it out before the actual event commences from the 1st of June will surely make for another interesting episode.

Talking Points:

India:

India’s two ODI superstars missed the first warm-up owing to unavailability and now, Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma will be eager to make the most out of the game on offer. While Yuvraj has recovered from his fever, Sharma too has reached England and joined the squad. Ajinkya Rahane messed up yet another opportunity after being dismissed for just 7 and now he is set to be replaced by Sharma. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have been one of India’s most prolific opening pairs but haven’t opened together in this format since January 2016. Against a decent bowling attack like Bangladesh, the duo will have a perfect opportunity to stamp their authority and begin their elegant integration at the top.

Like Rahane, Dinesh Karthik too squandered an opportunity as his 9 balls painful stay in the middle could well be his only outing in England. Yuvraj, coming on the back of some really good form against England in India’s previous ODI series, will be out to prove a point. Expected to be a starter in the playing XI, the pitches will suit Yuvraj’s strengths and now only the effort to acclimatise to the cold conditions of England remain.

Bangladesh:

Batting wise there were no goof ups for Bangladesh as the Tigers amassed a colossal 341 against Pakistan at Birmingham. Opener Tamim Iqbal relished his outing with a  delightful hundred and the other batsmen too contributed with productive knocks. The bowling, however, is a major concern as Pakistan were able to chase down 93 of the last 6 overs with just 2 wickets in hand.

Keeping that in mind, ace pacer Mustafizur Rahman who didn’t feature in the Pakistan game is expected to play against India and get some much-needed practice. Rahman has fond memories of playing against India, and even if he doesn’t bowl the entire ten overs, he will play a crucial role for Bangladesh.

Teams:

India: Virat Kohli (C), MS Dhoni (WK), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Yuvraj Singh, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav
