India registered an easy eight-wicket over South Africa to brush aside all the risk of a pre mature ouster and become the third team to qualify for the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy 2017. The match, which was expected to be a fiercely fought contest, ended up as a one-sided fixture, as South Africa failed to stay at par with India on Sunday.
After being asked to bat first, South Africa suffered a terrible collapse and managed just 191 on the scoreboard. Poor running between the wickets caused three run outs and apart from the casual batting approach. These factors witnessed South Africa slump badly despite being at a comfortable 116/2 at one stage. India, in response, was carried by Shikhar Dhawan (78) and Virat Kohli (76). The duo ensured a smooth chase and finished off the match without any fuss.
MS Dhoni was involved in four dismissals today. The bowling attack was led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, performance wise. The swing bowler ended with figures of 2/23. whereas, Jadeja, Ashwin and Pandya picked a wicket each. However, it was Jasprit Bumrah who ended up with the final accolades for his performance of 2/28. His wicket included Chris Morris and Andile Phelukwayo.
Bumrah was adjudged as the Man of The Match. Here is what he had to say:
“It was an important game for us. We were looking forward to the game. We wanted to be calm and wanted to execute our plans in this game, so it worked out for us. I was happy to bowl with the new ball. We contained well at the start.”
“The ball wasn’t swinging, so we wanted to stick to a tight line, not give them room. That was the basic plan for us. Morris can be dangerous in this situation, so it was good to get his wicket. It was a good toss to win and bowl first because the wickets haven’t been helping the fast bowlers. Chasing has been relatively easier.”
