2017 ICC Women’s World Cup – Final: England vs India – India Player’s Ratings

It was a great opportunity for the Women in Blue to lift their maiden World Cup title but it wasn’t to be, as hosts England staged a dramatic fightback and clinched a nail biting thriller by nine runs to lift their 4th World Cup title in their history. It was Anya Shurbsole who produced a magical spell of 6/44 and pegged the Indians back.

India looked set for a victory with Harmanpreet Kaur and Punam Raut going great guns but with the fall of Harman and Punam, it was a collapse and apart from Veda Krishnamurthy, nobody could get going. Shrubsole dismissed Punam and Veda Krishnamurthy at crucial junctures which eventually helped England win the match by nine runs.

So with the final of the Women’s World Cup done and dusted, let us have a look at the player ratings of the Indian team in the final.

Punam Raut- 4/5

Raut came into the tournament with a bagful of runs and she didn’t disappoint in the final too but when it mattered the most she couldn’t quite convert her start into a big one and gave away her wicket at an important time in the match.

She played a few aggressive shots early on but in the middle overs she kept on ticking along the scoreboard with singles and doubles and stitched together a brilliant partnership with Harmanpreet. Her innings of 86 were laced with four fours and a solitary six.

Smriti Mandhana- 0/5

I can’t help but give her a zero for her woeful form in the last few matches of the tournament. It was a brilliant delivery from Shrubsole which breached through Mandhana’s defence and disturbed the timbers. She couldn’t bother the scorers.

Mithali Raj- 2.5/5

Captain Mithali Raj led her troops well in the first part of the match and then with the bat, began in a composed manner like she does more often than not. Just when she looked set, an uncharacteristic lapse in concentration led her to her downfall on 17 in the form of a run-out.

Harmanpreet Kaur- 3.5/5

She started off from where she left in the previous match. She played some gorgeous grounded shots to begin her innings and looked solid in the middle. She was unperturbed and kept on milking the bowling for singles and doubles. She unleashed her big shots to reach her half century but soon after reaching the landmark she attempted a wild slog which was caught by the deep fielder. Her innings of 51 contained three fours and two sixes.

Veda Krishnamurthy- 3/5

Veda looked good during her brief stay and struck some magical shots to help India stroll towards the target. Until she was there it looked a cake walk for India but a wild slog at the score of 36 led to her downfall and with that the hopes of India. She struck five boundaries during her 36.

Sushma Verma- 0/5

She hasn’t done anything substantial in the tournament and it was no different on Sunday. She played a reckless shot to head back to the pavilion on a zero.

Deepti Sharma- 3/5

The left-arm spinner bowled well during her spell of nine overs and though she didn’t bag a wicket, she only conceded 39 runs. With the bat, she came towards the end and struck some good blows but her wicket in the penultimate over ended India’s chances.

Jhulan Goswami- 4/5

The tall fast bowler bowled brilliantly and was the primary reason behind India restricting England to a manageable score. She bowled in the perfect areas and bagged two wickets in consecutive deliveries but couldn’t quite bag the hat trick. It was a good piece of fast bowling which saw fast bowler ending with impressive figures of 3/23 in her 10 overs.

Shikha Pandey- 1.5/5

The medium pacer was smashed for 52 runs in her seven overs spell and looked out of sorts. She sprayed the ball around and the English batters made full use of the opportunity.

Rajeshwadi Gaikwad- 2.5/5

The leg-spinner wasn’t at her usual best and despite bagging the important wicket of Lauren Winfield, she conceded 49 runs in her allotted 10 overs to allow England cross the 200 mark.

Poonam Yadav- 3.5/5

Poonam bowled very well and finished with impressive figures of 2/36 in her 10 overs. She bagged the prized wicket of Tommy Beaumont and later dismissed Heather Knight to stem the run flow of the hosts. It was a good effort by Poonam who bowled well all through the tournament.
