Five Notable Absentees for India in the Limited Overs Series Against Australia

After an interesting tour of Sri Lanka, team India is gearing up for the limited overs series against Australia and given their strong run in the recent past; it won’t be a surprise if they win the series convincingly.

Though India is well aware of the fact that the scenario won’t be the same like it was against Sri Lanka, still they will go into the series as clear favourites despite the omission of some star players.

Suresh Raina continued to face the axe while Yuvraj Singh was overlooked for the second consecutive time. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin was also rested for the first 3 ODIs.

Meanwhile, Amit Mishra, who performed brilliantly in his last series last year and was the Man of the Series, is still not considered for selection.

Here are 5 Players who missed out the cut for the first 3 ODI’s against Australia.

Yuvraj Singh

The southpaw after making a sensational comeback earlier in the year has faced a slump in the form in the last few months which has led to his ouster from the team. Though the selectors conceded that Yuvraj is in the scheme of things and was rested for the series; given India’s tremendous fitness agility it is certain that Yuvraj can’t be in the future scheme of things.

Barring a half-century in the Champions Trophy, Yuvraj failed miserably and then went on to perform pretty poorly in West Indies which led to his omission from the Sri Lanka tour. He would like to feel that he still has some cricket left in him and if that is the case, then you can’t rule out another comeback provided he is a fighter.

Suresh Raina

Raina continues to get overlooked and has now been out of the ODI side for almost two years. He last played international cricket earlier in the year in the T20I series against England and scored a classy half-century. He played his last ODI way back in November 2015 against South Africa, and after a lacklustre performance, he was dropped from the squad and never regained his place back.

He is still a limited overs asset and can be a terrific batsman especially in crunch situations. Given his experience, Raina can be a handy option, but he can only be included if someone performs reasonably badly.

Ravindra Jadeja

The former No.1 Test bowler was rested for the previous series in Sri Lanka and also the first 3 ODI’s against Australia. He is not quite the same bowler which he is in Tests and tends to fire the ball in limited overs cricket and bowl fast. He has to improve and matured as a limited overs bowler, but given his abilities, he will remain the primary spinner along with Ashwin.

Jadeja had a dramatic series against Sri Lanka but couldn’t quite maintain his numero uno status as James Anderson removed him from the top spot with a breathtaking spell of 7/42 in the final Test against West Indies. He will look to make a return in the limited overs side for the last 2 ODI’s against Australia.

Ravichandran Ashwin

The offie who has been the spearhead of Indian bowling attack especially in the Test arena for a couple of years now has been given rest for the first 3 ODI’s as Ashwin is busy playing county cricket in England and the BCCI has allowed him to remain there despite the series against the Aussies. He has been given rest and will look to play the final two ODI’s if he is picked.

He has been a star of Indian cricket for the past few years and has been a sensational Test bowler and has already bagged 292 wickets in 52 Tests at an impressive average of 25. His record in ODI’s isn’t that great scalped 150 wickets at a not so impressive average of 33.

Amit Mishra

Leggie Amit Mishra has been pretty unlucky. Despite winning the Man of the Series Award in his last ODI series against New Zealand he has been overlooked since then at the expense of other young spinners like Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal. The biggest problem with the experienced campaigner has been his consistency. Mishra has failed to show good consistency and hence hasn’t been included in the future tours.
