5 One Season Wonders In Indian Premier League

The Indian Premier League has always been a great platform to showcase the talent to the cricketing world for the youngsters. A lot of youngsters have been benefitted from the IPL and went on to make remarkable numbers for the Indian National Cricket Team. On the other side of the coin, there are few cricketers, who showed their impeccable brilliance in one season and never repeated the show. Meanwhile, we figured out five such players.

Here are they:

5. Swapnil Asnodkar:

Right in the first edition of Indian Premier League, we got to see the talent of Swapnil Asnodkar. In a great journey of Rajasthan Royals in the first edition of the grand tournament, Swapnil Asnodkar was one of the few players, who helped his side to seal the victory.

Batting at the top-order, he used to take care of the powerplay overs and scored runs on a consistent basis for the team. He always got the backing from the Australian legend Shane Warne for his brilliance with the bat.

He went on to score 311 runs in nine matches and it was with the help of outstanding domestic talents like Asnodkar that Rajasthan Royals went on to win the 2008 IPL.

However, it was the only season, which saw him performing. Then he faded away and couldn’t able to make a name of himself in any other edition. However, he has been brilliant in the domestic circuit.

4. Manpreet Gony:

The right-handed fast bowler was one of the go-to bowlers for Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the first edition of the tournament. He helped Dhoni-led CSK to reach the final of the tournament, which was lost against Rajasthan Royals.

Gony’s brilliant display helped him garner the name despite the team having many big names on the paper. He scalped 17 wickets in 16 matches but unfortunately, it was the last time for the youngster to enjoy the success.

Soon, he faded away and couldn’t quite repeat things for CSK. He then played for quite a few franchises like Deccan Chargers and then for Kings XI Punjab but failed to perform on a consistent. It eventually saw him being out of the team.

Now, he is an active player for Punjab in the domestic circuit but hasn’t attracted any bids in the last couple of years.

3. Saurabh Tiwary:

Yet another player, who has been the one season wonder was Saurabh Tiwary. He was one of the few players, who impressed the Indian skipper MS Dhoni and the BCCI selectors to give him an early call-up to represent Indian team.

The power-hitter scored 419 runs in 16 matches in 2010 with a strike rate of close to 136, playing crucial innings on many occasions.

His brilliant show made Mumbai to pick him in a couple of editions but he wasn’t the same youngster, who is willing to score runs on a consistent basis.

But, he never utilised the opportunity. Tiwary also lost control over his body fitness and hardly showed his skills in the middle. He failed to make things fall in place, which saw him being out from the team on quite a few occasions.

2. Sreenath Aravind:

The Karnataka fast bowler is one of the unluckiest cricketers in the Indian cricket. He has always done especially well for his side in order to deliver the goods. But, he always ended up remembering to fans for the wrong reasons. He was the one, who conceded 6 boundaries on a trot Ajinkya Rahane.

However, he has been sensational for Royal Challengers Bangalore throughout the season. He got a remarkable strike rate of 13.14 and bagged as many as 21 wickets in 13 matches. Aravind was one of the strong contenders to collect purple cap in the season.

But, unfortunately, it was the only season, which saw him delivering the goods for RCB. The primary reason behind his fall down is being an injury-prone player.

Whenever his career took a boost, something or the other injury pulled him down. Recently, he announced his retirement as well.

1. Paul Valthaty:

Who can forget his name in the Indian Premier League? The century he scored against Chennai Super Kings will always go down as one of the best centuries in the IPL history. He was sensational for Kings XI Punjab during the 2011 season.

Valthaty scored 463 runs at an average of 35.61. He announced himself to the world in a grand fashion. But, sadly, it was the only season, which saw his brilliance in the IPL. Slowly, he faded out and never been able to make things fall in place again.

Along with his batting, he even picked up seven wickets with his part-time medium pace bowling and it seemed that he was indeed the next big thing in Indian Cricket.

In the following season, he scored 30 runs off 6 games, which saw his ouster from the franchise.
