IPL 8: Five things that Delhi need to do end losing streak

Pavan Suresh / 15 April 2015

Delhi Daredevils are on a 11-match losing streak now as they have lost 9 last year and 2 matches already this year in the IPL. In this year’s edition they have lost 2 close matches, losing both on the last ball on both occasions. With Delhi playing Punjab today at Pune, it is important that Delhi start winning matches.

Here we look at what the Delhi Daredevils need to do to end their losing streak –

1. Show confidence in Indian players

In the two matches played so far the Indian domestic players like Sheryas Iyer, Mayank Aggarwal, Kedar Jadhav, Manoj Tiwary are the players that have had the need to depend upon. The team management must give the confidence to these young players to perform and create a name for themselves by playing freely without much pressure. It is important that all these domestic Indian players can contribute to the team’s success as they certainly need some spark to change their fortunes.

2. Need their impact players to score more

It is important that their main players like Yuvraj Singh, JP Duminy and Angelo Mathews take charge of scoring runs. In the last match, JP Duminy came in at number 3 while Yuvraj Singh came at number 4. Atleast 1 or 2 players must bat the full 20 overs so that they can post a good total which is not easy to chase for the opponents.

3. Aggressive captaincy

JP Duminy, the new captain for Delhi Daredevils this edition, has to show some aggressive captaincy in order to win matches. JP Duminy needs to make aggressive changes in bowling and not allow the batsmen to settle. While batting they need to score big runs to put pressure on the bowlers and just be calm and confident about their abilities,

4. Need of good pace bowling

Delhi Daredevils are in need of good pace bowlers who can trouble the opponent batsmen. With Mohmmad Shami and Zaheer Khan not available their pace bowling has been exposed. Only Amit Mishra and Imran Tahir have looked impressive and if the pace bowlers continue to leak runs it is difficult to comeback in the tournament.

5. Death bowling

The death bowling is a cause of concern for Delhi Daredevils. While defending 186 in the previous match they had to defend over 12 runs per over and eventually 12 off the last over. Angelo Mathews failed to defend 3 runs off the last bowl adding to the previous misery. They need to have bowlers bowling Yorkers at will but also needs to take care that against strong batting line-up like of Punjab Super King, they have to pick wickets at regular intervals.
