Pakistan cricketer Abid Ali has utilised the chance to impress the selectors. In the first Test match against Sri Lanka, he scored his maiden century in the debut Test match.
The 32-year-old is the experienced domestic player who got the chance in the playing XI against Sri Lanka. He has played 106 first-class matches and scored 7116 runs which include 19 centuries. The swashbuckling cricketer was ignored by the selectors for a long time. But he constantly scored runs in domestic side. He was eagerly waiting for a chance to prove his worth in Pakistan National Cricket Team.
Finally, he got the chance in Test cricket on the home soil against Sri Lanka who is touring second time this year. The game was badly affected by weather, with only 91.5 overs possible on the first three days and the fourth day washed out completely. However, Abid Ali managed to impress on the fifth day, scoring unbeaten 109 runs.
When Pakistan toured Australia, he was selected in the squad but was not given a chance in final XI. It was a drastic tour for Pakistan as they went to lose both the Test matches. Well, Abid Ali is happy to get the chance and has no complained about being ignored.
“I knew someday I will get a chance and I was always ready for it. Thankfully I got it and a hundred on debut game is what else you ask for,” he said.
“I had never grumbled on being ignored,” said Abid.
The player is regularly compared with the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar. He also had a dream to meet his idol, Sachin Tendulkar during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 where he was dropped between the tournament. He believes that one day he will surely meet Sachin. He also further added not to compare him with the legends like Sachin.
“I could not meet Tendulkar because I did not play the World Cup,” he added. “I had patience and I had a belief that my time will come and then I will prove what I am capable of.”
“I am an ordinary player and I can’t match those great players,” Abid said. “I am Abid Ali and please see me as Abid Ali only.
“I am a down-to-earth person, so I would like to keep on performing and serve Pakistan with distinction.” He added: “I need to raise my game and with every chance, I have to perform well. I have self-belief, I waited for my time and finally, I got it.”
