Afghanistan seals quarterfinal berth beating Sri Lanka in a rain-affected encounter

Sri Lanka fell 32 runs short of Afghanistan’s target in overcast conditions at the Cobham Oval in Whangarei in a rain-affected encounter. Skipper Naved-ul-Haq struck four times after Ibrahim Zadran, Ikram Ali Khil, and Darwish Rasooli scored half-centuries to help their team go past 250.

Sri Lanka started well as Thisaru Rashmika gave them the first breakthrough in the seventh over. He had Rahmanullah Gurbaz trapped in front for a 17-ball 7. Ibrahim Zadran and one drop Ali Khil rode the storm though as they gradually put the pressure back on the Lankans.

The duo added a steadying 115 for the second wicket, frustrating Sri Lanka as the game progressed. Ali Khil eventually departed off Kamindu Mendis, the Sri Lanka captain, and Zadran followed him four overs later for a 112-ball 86 that comprised five towering sixes. Afghanistan was stranded at 172/3 in the 38th over, but Rasooli then single-handedly took the match away.

Rasooli came hard at the Sri Lankan bowlers scoring 63 off just 44 balls in the including nine fours and a six. While he was in the middle, Afghanistan was well in line to cross the 300 run mark; however, his run-out put the breaks on Afghanistan. Nisar Wahdat (25), Azmatullah Omarzai (20), and Qais Ahmed (10) ensured Sri Lanka would still need a special effort to chase down 285 runs.

In reply, Sri Lanka was struggling at 11 for 2 after losing both their openers with five overs. However, efforts from Krishan Arachchige (41), Jehan Daniel (48), and Ashen Bandara (38) couldn’t take their team home after the target was reduced to 235 runs in 38 overs due to rain.

A disciplined bowling performance from their bowlers ensured Afghanistan their second victory in the tournament. Skipper Naved led from the front picking four wickets well cushioned by Azmatullah and Qais Ahmed, who bagged two wickets each.

Afghanistan is now sitting high ensuring a quarterfinal berth after registering two wins from two matches.
