Ajinkya Rahane’s Name For Discussion To Make A Comeback For New Zealand ODIs
Ajinkya Rahane has continuously expressed his desire to make a comeback in the ODI format. Now, there have been reports that the Test vice-captain’s name is in discussion while selecting the squad for the ODI series against the hosts New Zealand which will start next month.
As per a report in Mumbai Mirror, Rahane’s name was discussed by an important member of the team during the selection meeting. Rahane has last played the One Day International against South Africa in Centurion ODI on 16th February 2018. He was also not a part of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 squad. Though it was earlier said that Rahane could be selected for the No.4 batting position during the mega event, he was not selected in the World Cup squad. But he has been regular for the team in the longest format.
Ajinkya Rahane already featured in one Cricket World Cup and two World T20s
Rahane was a part of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 squad. He also played in the 2014 and 2016 T20 World Cups. It will be interesting to see how the Test specialist makes a comeback in the white-ball format. Rahane will have to face the tough fight with the youngsters like Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill.
Prithvi Shaw, who made the domestic cricket return in last November after serving a backdated eight-month ban because of doping, surfaced with a shoulder injury during the recent Ranji Trophy match. But, he still might be in the plans of the team management and selectors for the coming assignment in New Zealand.
Meanwhile, after competing against Australia in the home ODI series, India will tour New Zealand to play five-match T20I series, three-match ODI series, and two Tests. It is the lengthy tour which will be played from 24th January to 4th March. The T20I squad for this tour has been announced already. In this squad, the wicketkeeper Sanju Samson has been excluded which has brought wide criticism for BCCI.
