The Story
The Ashes squad gets announced on Wednesday at 10 am ahead of the 4th One Day International against the Windies which also happens to be the day when the final round of Specsavers County Championship matches will be played.
There are more than a couple of positions in the batting order that the soon-to-be visitors will be trying to fill up before kicking off their journey. A few months ago they had most of the things covered before injury and form concerns crept up the Ashes holder.
Most recently seamer Toby Roland-Jones and opener Haseeb Hameed suffered injury setbacks during a County Championship matches which possibly cut off their chances of making it to the Ashes squad. This scenario means that there are places up for grabs.
Eoin Morgan Backs Players to use ODI Platform
The ODI side boasts of a few Ashes hopefuls like Alex Hales and Jos Buttler who may make the cut. The pair looks like strong contenders as far as current scenario is concerned and may likely gain selection for the Ashes tour.
However, nothing remains confirmed, s both Hales and Buttler are yet to nail their position. The uncertainty means the duo will have to utilise every opportunity that comes their way starting from the remainder of the limited-overs series against the Windies. Limited-overs skipper Eoin Morgan has backed the pair to win a place in the squad.
“Jos is going to Bangladesh and Alex is going to Stellenbosch in South Africa. That’s their alternative plans,” said Morgan of Hales and Buttler after the washed-out second one-day international against West Indies at Trent Bridge on Thursday.
“I’d like to see them play in an Ashes series. Ashes and World Cups are the pinnacles of our careers so to see guys playing in that format and doing well would boost confidence massively.
“They have a huge amount of ability in all three formats, and if an opportunity presented itself in an Ashes series as opposed to a T20 league, I’d say take the Ashes every time,” the former Ireland international insisted.
